I do this a lot in my freelance writing. If I'm in a rut, or I'm just procrastinating because the job is boring, I grab a pen and go find a change of scenery. Though I don't end up doing much writing in pen (like William, I have handwriting issues), I do usually come back with a working outline. In fact, I'm procrastinating on a magazine article that's due tomorrow and I could really use some pen and pad time right now. Also, I'm heading out to the Atlanta Renaissance Faire this weekend, I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for those Murano glass pens! Hear, hear! I do this a lot in my freelance writing.
