hi i have joined twitter, but all that happens is that I get some messages saying this person or that person is following me on twitter. How do I find people with similar interests to mine? Or people who might pay for art, or books etc

There are a number of 3rd party tools that work with Twitter that you could use, or you could search by keyword using http://search.twitter.com to see if people match your interests. Twitter takes time, so be patient.
