I also wanted to point out that Amazon uses Twitter (and SMS too) to send out updates on all their goldbox and video game deals of the day, and it is the tool via which I find out about them. It absolutely is effective as a marketing tool - and this is where the 140-character limit comes in extraordinarily handy. There's no room for spin, just straight to the message. It also means the time it takes to write this message is extremely short, so even a very small response will likely make up for any time spent on the channel.

Of course there's a lot more value to twitter than this. I am only listing Amazon as an example of a retailer who is using Twitter very effectively. They've certainly gotten some of my money because of their Twitter marketing channel.
