This is a refreshing post. Especially in the world of self-promotion, you tend to get that inflated, slick copy akin to an advetorial.

And I understand what LShep means by the design and people's talents lying elsewhere. However, it's not that hard to find an interesting and stylish pre-designed template and add some widgets you can find online. A simple and clean design with easy navigation and a few style flourishes can go a long way. And actually, I think site design has gotten simplified. Which is ideal for any novice who's willing to maneuver around copy and pasting and rearranging a template.

I agree with every point except for the web design. Some people's talents simply lie elsewhere. I can't design a thing, I just don't have the knowledge to do so and the cost to hire someone to do so is getting more and more exorbitant by the day. If someone likes my samples and sees that I have extensive experience but won't hire me because my website isn't fancy enough, I'm not sure that's someone I would want as a client.
